1936年、GanderとNiederbergerは、ビタミンCが肺炎患者の熱と痛みを軽減することを報告しました。同年、Hochwaldも同様の結果を報告しています。1946年にはSlotkinが「バッファロー市のミラード・フィルモア病院において、一般外科医が肺炎の予防措置としてビタミンCを使用し、手術後合併症としての肺炎は完全になくなった」と報告しています。

ウイルスによって病気になることと、ウイルスが引き起こした疾患によって死ぬことは、全く別のことです。ビタミンCのサプリメントとプラセボを用いた1994年の無作為化二重盲検試験では、急性呼吸器感染症(気管支炎・気管支肺炎)で入院した高齢患者57人を被験者とし、呼吸状態の主要症状に基づく臨床スコア評価を行いました。

結果として、ビタミンCサプリメントを与えたグループがプラセボグループより有意に臨床スコアが良くなりました。これが特に顕著であったのは、試験開始時点に重症度の最も高かったグループです。このグループでは、多くが入院時に測定したビタミンCの血漿中ならびに白血球中濃度も非常に低い値でした。

ビタミンCの使用について考える

ビタミンCは免疫系をサポートする働きがあります。また、ウイルスを殺して感染症状の緩和に役立ちます。ビタミンCは新型コロナウイルス感染症を治すものはありません。しかし、ビタミンCを摂れば命が助かる可能性もあり、感染症の程度を軽減することは間違いありません。「そんなことは証明されていない」と誰かに言われたら2つのことを考えてみましょう。

新型コロナウイルスは新しいウイルスで、効くことが証明されている方法はまだ何もない。
ビタミンCは、インフルエンザや肺炎、さらにポリオを含むあらゆる単一ウイルスに効果をもたらしている。

米国国立医学図書館の国立生物工学情報センターにおける医学文献には、64,000件を超えるビタミンCに関する公表論文・研究が閲覧可能となっています。ビタミンCは、存在している物質の中でおそらく最も研究されているものの一つであり、そうした研究の多くは非常に肯定的です。

「ビタミンCに関する研究結果や有益性、使用方法を知らない」ことを治療に用いない言い訳にすることはできません。他に利用できる既知の薬物療法がなく、害を及ぼすことがないとされる場合には特にそうです。公表されている研究論文は、どなたでも閲覧可能となっています。
